Why The Army can’t Understand the Navy (and vice-versa)

(Just for entertainment, though there might be a moral in here somewhere. This story was related to me by a Master Chief Petty Officer Ret. while visiting the Decommissioned Los Angeles Naval Armory.

Military culture is surprisingly uniform

Our volunteer warriors willingly place themselves in harm’s way to protect family and nation in times of crisis. They are a close-knit culture, serving honorably in peacetime in a myriad of ways including responding to disasters around the world.

The Esprit de Corps in each Service is phenomenal.

Therefore, it is astounding to learn that the Navy and the Army, not to mention the Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard cannot even agree to the common meanings of certain words.

Take for example the word “secure”

The four services have a very different conception of what this word means.

Tell an Army Officer to “Secure the building” and they will take a detachment of soldiers, put a perimeter around the building and put a machine gun nest…
